You seem so focused Never mind my mess, just give it a rest Don’t police my nest, I know that you’re obsessed It’s not appropriate, just mind your own business It’s impolite to behave like this Imposing your code of conduct While exposing your intolerance Presuming your moral high ground While gaslighting your audience I try empathy You choose judgment and assume my fate Well I’m sorry but you are too little too late There’s no need to be overly concerned If us heathens are gonna burn There’s enough room, let’s try and coexist I can’t stress this point enough This life is so tough and the day to day is hard enough Why waste your sweet time on being so worried about everybody else? Imposing your code of conduct While exposing your intolerance Presuming your moral high ground While gaslighting everyone around No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine No need to worry My soul’s doing fine You have your own faith And I have mine

Let’s be honest You sabotage yourself You’re your own worst enemy No matter how much love I give you always implode on me Another argument Another sleepless night Just paralyzed, witless & tongue tied One good gust will bring down this whole thing Our love is brittle like cheap porcelain One good gust will bring down this whole thing Our love is brittle like cheap porcelain Let’s be honest My words are wasted breath When you’re full on defensive Belligerent with no empathy Another argument Another misinterpreted Facial expression or idiotic statement One good gust will bring down this whole thing Our love is brittle like cheap porcelain It’s beyond us yet we’re grasping at straws Trying desperately to keep together this lost cause It’s sand thru our hands Our love is brittle like porcelain Yeah, yeah Our love is brittle like porcelain Yeah, like cheap porcelain, yeah

Sinking In 04:08
Do you feel it sinking in? We’ve passed the point of no return The oceans are rising And the cold ground’s gonna burn Oh what a vision on your lonely ice float Paddling without safe shore or any hope Oh the stress of this industrial caress Do you feel like you’re gonna win? Because this game is rigged for you and your friends Oh what a vision on your lonely ice float Paddling without safe shore or any hope As the flames lick the sky and you’re gonna choke Because there is no air and nowhere to go When there’s no safe place to go There’s no safe place to go There's no safe place to go There's no safe place to go There's no safe place to go And the revenue will not mean a goddamn thing Once the ecosystem starts unraveling We’ll all be washed away, washed away I hope you know how to swim And all the record profits will not keep you safe Once the air darkens and all the levees break We’ll all be washed away, washed away Just simply forgotten Washed away, washed away Washed away, washed away

What good’s a five year plan? What good’s a career path? What good’s a professional certificate if you can’t pay it back? What good is intellect when it’s cut down to size What good can we expect from a system so corrupt and proselytized If money talks & bullshit walks It’s pay to play at any cost If money talks & bullshit walks Then all value's already lost There is no guarantee There is no sure thing in this life The only certainty Is that our debt outlives our lives What’s job security? What’s really earning your keep? What’s maintaining a lifestyle but a dream while you sleep? What is our greater good if not to fill the banks? If not to purchase like consumers should And give thanks If money talks & bullshit walks It’s pay to play at any cost If money talks & bullshit walks And all value's already lost There is no guarantee There is no sure thing in this life The only certainty Is that our debt outlives our lives There is no guarantee There is no sure thing in this life The only certainty Is that our debt outlives our lives There is no guarantee There is no guarantee There is no guarantee The only certainty Is that our debt outlives our lives

The plot is paper thin Awkward & full of spin The obvious is now confusing Overwrought in suspicion Too many cooks in my kitchen It’s all deep breaths and mysticism No reassurance By a defective detective No reassurance By a defective detective There’s no breadcrumb trail to lead us to the bakery Have our senses failed to question this treachery? Words fail conveyance Meaning is allusive The gravity of definition is invalidated Truth is inconvenient if it doesn’t fit your narrative Facts are redacted and civility is assassinated No reassurance By a defective detective No reassurance By a defective detective No reassurance By a defective detective Defective detective Defective detective

We’re just taking up space And filling up the bleachers Our minds have been debased By the superficial teachers of anti-knowledge Hello hello is anyone there We’re all transfixed with a cold blank stare Oh well oh well why should anybody care Just gaping grind sucking in the hot air Is apathy contagious? Is cynicism in? There nothing to contain us from overflowing Hello hello is anyone there? Is this thing on, does anybody care? Just changing channels with a cold blank stare Just sitting idle without a thought or care Antipathy, antipathy It’s the end of human decency Disinterested, disinterested Not impacted by your tragedy Your cold blank stare, beyond repair It’s all about convenience It’s all about the self The bypassing of conscience The passive audience The growing rifts between us Forming broken circuits Antipathy, antipathy Welcome in a new dark age Disinterested, disinterested I’m disappointed by your lack of outrage Your cold blank stare, beyond repair Antipathy, antipathy

Friendships purchased, held on healthy retainer Are always subject to some kind of over-explaining Confidences kept in files, locked like containers Reminiscent of old-fashioned marriage arrangements A lifetime of sad overcompensation The only love you know comes via litigation At such an advanced age, still playing loose & dangerous Because there’s always a safety net below and paramedics It’s not real, there’s no way, you still somehow entertain us Even under layers of lawyers and miraculous cosmetics A lifetime of bad deals, a bankrupt assailant A bloviated pig squeals about fake news, that’s entertainment A lifetime of sad overcompensation The only love you know comes via litigation The business suits The braggadocio The living proof it’s all in who you know It’s all in who you know It’s all in who you know It’s all in who you know It’s all in who you know Bankrupt braggadocio Bankrupt braggadocio Bankrupt braggadocio It's all in who you know

From womb to tomb, it's all about delivery There's a market for every memory And bought & sold it’s all about the fix The game is rigged but we still take the risk Our luck is pressed, our buttons always stick And the more we want, the more we reach out for it Until it's gone and we're crying like infants Without mommy's tit It is nurture versus nature It's the future, learned behavior It is nurture versus nature It's a suture not a savior It is nurture versus nature From our toddler crawl to the baby step Our needs control us all and our resources are limited From our first tumble to our last desperate call Out to any one who would give a shit We're trying to relate To our primal state We're clinging for dear life And we really don't know why Where is the nature? What is nurturing? Our fucked up behavior Is there really anything worth trying to relate to? We're trying to erase her Trying to erase her

Led into familiar traps Misguided by the same lack of self control at the bottom of the bottle Drawn down familiar paths Derided from the high road, led all alone into a dark ambivalent hole Sink or swim, this is happening The undertow passes no judgment Ended begin with no cognition This dark unknown an environment Bled like the escaping wind From a deflated lung collapsed beneath dissolving self-belief Fled from these familiar traps Only to end up back at square one, opting out for self defeat Sink or swim, this is happening The undertow passes no judgment Ended begin with no cognition This dark unknown an environment Sink or swim, this is happening The undertow passes no judgment Ended begin with no cognition This dark unknown an environment

Sapling 03:45
Your parents lied, they don’t really love you The teachers lied, they don’t really like you You’re not full of potential Sorry to burst your bubble Your leaders lied, they’re in it for the money The preacher tried to pet you like a bunny And as a direct result You ran from their cult Oh mom and dad, just listen up I’m not that dumb, I’m just not living to my potential Because perfection isn’t any fun Oh mom, let go of dad He’s lost interest in being a part of this routine Routines aren’t for everyone And neither are sports or piano lessons or recitals or baby modeling You wasted all your money on living vicariously Your parents tried to get the most out of you They wrung you dry and washed their hands of you By your sweet 16th their disdain could not be contained Oh mom and dad, just listen up I’m not that dumb I’m just not applying myself Perfection’s not for everyone Oh mom, just leave dad Out in the cold, he’s a sapling left on the vine He never matured to his potential He never wanted to grow up Daddy’s still a sapling Just barely ripening Prolonged adolescence Prolonged adolescence Prolonged adolescence It’s an embarrassment I know I’m not that special, you didn’t burst my bubble I know I’m not that special, you didn’t burst my bubble Oh mom & dad, just listen up I know that I’m not living up to my potential But perfection’s not possible Oh mom, just leave dad Out in the cold, he’s a sapling left on the vine He never matured to his potential He never wanted to grow up Daddy’s a sapling An embarrassment Wasted potential An embarrassment An embarrassment Wasted potential

Alt-Wrong 04:08
Fuck the fact checkers, dismiss the intelligence You've got no use for so-called experience You like it so much better, flexing your belligerence Waving your flags & brandishing your weapons This outrage is fake, and so is your media You're deplorable & emboldened You're consumed by hate, by the hysteria Easily misguided & outspoken Ignorant & ill-informed Blame it on the immigrants Blame it on the liberals Ignorant & ill-informed Blame it on the immigrants Blame it on the liberals Drunk on spite So called alt-right So convinced of your rights while dismissing mine Drunk on spite So called alt-right So convinced that your rights are different than mine There’s a clear divide Between what’s wrong and what’s right Shrouded by your white pride Your loss of privilege isn’t a plight Lost privilege is not a plight Lost privilege is not a plight Lost privilege is not a plight Fuck jingoists and paid hypocrites Our lives have more value than these fucked politics So ignorant and ill-informed Don’t blame it on the liberals Don’t blame it on the immigrants, no Why are we all falling for this?

about

For seven years, three friends gather nearly every Sunday morning in a makeshift studio space at an industrial park just outside of Los Angeles, to play loud music influenced by a collective love of brash indie and alternative rock & roll. A lot of things evolve over those seven years - marriages happen, kids are born, jobs are changed. But the music persists, and it evolves too.

Seven years (and some delays caused by a global pandemic) later, the result is Not Born Enemies, the trio’s third album. Not Born Enemies is, in the words of frontman Vic Lazar, “a big guitar rock record,” full of distorted riffs, pounding drums, shouted words, and a few odd time signatures. Lyrical themes are often what the band talks about when together: concerns over the state of the world (“Sinking In,” “Alt-Wrong”), a certain political figure (“Layers of Lawyers”), and the use of language for disinformation (“Defective Detective”), as well as Lazar’s own struggles with parenthood and life (“Sapling,” “Familiar Traps”).

For Not Born Enemies, Some Gifts teamed up with producer Ben Moore at San Diego’s Singing Serpent, marking the band’s first fully studio recorded album.
